Quotes To Live By
Quote #101: Ann-Marie Shibley
Hi, I'm Ann-Marie Shibley, a mental health therapist, and member of the Midland Area Wellbeing Coalition. A quote that is meaningful to me is "Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and right doing, there is a field. I'll meet you there" by Rumi.
The reason I find this quote so meaningful is that the majority of my professional life I have worked as a therapist with people involved in the criminal justice system, whether it be while they are incarcerated or on probation/parole. It is easy to judge others harshly when we have yet to learn their story, and for myself, letting go of black and white thinking allows me to remain curious and open. In turn, I have had the opportunity to connect with the common humanity in each of us, allowing space for the idea that we are all doing our best, while also all having room to grow.
This quote supports my wellbeing as it is a reminder of the importance of letting go of rigid thinking, and moving towards cognitive flexibility and compassion - both of which have been shown to reduce symptoms associated with anxiety and depression. The more I practice compassion towards others, the more I am able to show compassion towards my more challenging target - myself.
So, I wonder if there is a person or situation in your own life where it may be helpful to let go of being right, and instead lean into curiosity and compassion. This has been brought to you by the Midland Area Wellbeing Coalition's Quotes to Live By Series. Be kind to yourself.
