Quotes To Live By

Quote #199: Allison Byron

Hi, I’m Allison Byron. I work as an SEL Specialist with Midland Public Schools, I’m part of the Midland Area Wellbeing Coalition, and I’m also a mama to an amazing baby girl. A quote that really sticks with me is, “You don’t have to control your thoughts. You just have to stop letting them control you,” by Dan Millman.

This quote means a lot to me because some days my head feels full — full of plans, worries, reminders, and that little voice wondering if I’m doing enough. Becoming a parent has made that even more true. This quote reminds me that I don’t have to wrestle with every thought that pops up. I can notice it, take a breath, and decide what actually deserves my energy. This idea shows up a lot in my work, too. When I’m coaching staff or teaching mindfulness lessons with students, we talk about noticing thoughts instead of reacting to them right away. That pause can change how we move through a tough moment, a long day, or a hard conversation. It’s a small shift that can make things feel more manageable.

So, what’s one thought you could notice today and let pass without letting it run the show? This has been brought to you by the Midland Area Wellbeing Coalition's Quotes to Live By Series. Take care!
