Life Hack in Action #6: Mindful Movement

"Hello, I’m Jim Nigro, I recently retired from the McKay Press, and now I'm working with the Midland Area Wellbeing Coalition as an Outreach Assistant. I'm excited to share a Life Hack that has significantly impacted my life, Life Hack # 17 Mindful Movement. As I am approaching 65, my body isn't as agile as it once was, and I've experienced the challenges of aging, like chronic pain and joint stiffness. The idea of Mindful Movement is simple but profound - keep moving. I view life as a bicycle; if you stop moving, you lose your balance and fall off. What I enjoy about this Life Hack is It doesn't have to be intense movement; a short walk around the block or climbing stairs at home works wonders. I've incorporated movement into my daily routine. My favorate is going for a with my dog a couple of times a day. Yet, even on icy days, I find alternatives like climbing stairs at home. Studies show that just a few minutes of daily exercise can improve mood, blood pressure, energy, sleep, and overall vitality. Personally, I believe in the philosophy that we don't stop moving because we grow old; we grow old because we stop moving. My Apple Watch acts as a helpful reminder to stand up and move, preventing long periods of sedentary behavior. It's a small change, but it has a big impact on promoting wellbeing and avoiding stagnation, which, for me, leads to the blues. So, I encourage everyone to find ways to incorporate a little more movement each day and to find their own way to keep moving and stay vibrant. "
