Life Hack #101: Toss the Turnings

Do you struggle to get a quality night's sleep? Do you sometimes stay up later than you want or get up earlier than you’d prefer? If so, you're not alone. Many people have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, leaving them feeling tired and groggy the next day. Studies show that one of the best ways to get the benefits of good sleep is by establishing a regular sleep routine. This has significant mood and health benefits for us. But how do we toss the turnings? Our brains love habit and routine so developing a consistent, calming pre-sleep ritual can signal your brain that it’s time to wind down. Involve multiple senses - soothing textures, calming scents, warm lighting, peaceful sounds - these can all remind our brain that bedtime is near. Additionally, ditching social media and mindless phone scrolling at least an hour before bed can help your brain relax and prepare for sleep. Bedtime yoga, deep breathing exercises, and stretching are also effective ways to relax your mind and body. Perhaps most importantly, establishing a routine of going to bed and waking up at roughly the same time each day is key to quality sleep habits. Finally, practice calming the mind, through journaling or making notes before bed which can help put your mind at ease and promote restful sleep. Toss those turnings by developing a sleep habit that works for you and enjoy those sweet dreams!
